Prince Charles of England weds Lady Diane Spencer

       Crowds of 600,000 people filled the streets of London to catch a glimpse of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer on their wedding day.
Held at St Paul's Cathedral, the event was watched by a congregation of 3,500 and an estimated global TV audience of 750 million.
       Lady Diana arrived from Clarence House for the late morning ceremony in the Glass Coach with her father, Earl Spencer.
       She wore an Emanuel designed ivory taffeta and antique lace gown with a 25ft (7.62m) train. Charles was attired in the full dress uniform of a naval commander.
       The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Robert Runcie, led the traditional Church of England service, assisted by clergymen from many denominations.
       Wedding day nerves were apparent during the ceremony. Diana mixed up the Prince's names and calling him Philip Charles Arthur George, rather than Charles Philip. The groom referred to "thy goods" rather than "my worldly goods".
       After the private signing ceremony, the Prince and Princess of Wales walked back down the aisle to Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance.
       The newlyweds took the open-topped State landau to Buckingham Palace where they emerged on the balcony for a public kiss. They were later driven over Westminster Bridge to catch the train to Romsey in Hampshire. They honeymooned on the Royal Yacht Britannia, and this 12-day cruise through the Mediterranean to Egypt was followed by a stay at Balmoral.

USS Midway July 29, 1980 Collision with the Cactus

Following a period in Yokosuka, Midway relieved Coral Sea May 30, 1980 on standby south of the Cheju-Do Islands in the Sea of Japan following the potential of civil unrest in the Republic of Korea. While transiting the passage between Palawan Island of the Philippines and the coast of Northern Borneo on July 29, Midway collided with the Panamanian merchant ship Cactus. The Cactus was 450 nautical miles southwest of Subic Bay and headed to Singapore. The collision occurred near the liquid oxygen plant and two sailors working in the plant were killed, three were injured. Midway sustained light damage and three F-4 Phantom aircraft parked on the flight deck were also damaged. On August 17th, Midway relieved Constellation to begin another Indian Ocean deployment and to complement the Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) task group still on contingency duty in the Arabian Sea. Midway spent a total of 118 days in the Indian Ocean during 1980.

The 1979 Peter Jackson Classic was contested from July 26–29 at Richelieu Valley Golf Club. It was the 7th edition of the Peter Jackson Classic, and the 1st edition as a major championship on the LPGA Tour.
This event was won by Amy Alcott.

Interplanetary "shock wave" hits the earth.

          At 0027 UT(universal time) on July 29, 1977 an interplanetary shock wave arrived at the front side magnetosphere and triggered substantial geomagnetic activity throughout the day. The propagation of the resulting MHD wave within the magnetosphere has been studied with measurements from a total of six satellites in (or near) the geostationary orbit and the interplanetary space and groundbased magnetometers. The signal transmission from the front side magnetopause down to the equatorial ionosphere corresponded to an average wave speed of v equals 600 km/sec. A propagation speed of v equals 90 km/sec was found for the signal transmission in the outer magnetosphere in and beyond the geostationary altitude. The results compared reasonably well with model calculations.

         The heated air rises, and the density at the orbit of satellites up to about 1,000 km (621 mi) increases significantly. This results in increased drag on satellites in space, causing them to slow and change orbit slightly. Unless Low Earth Orbit satellites are routinely boosted to higher orbits, they slowly fall, and eventually burn up in Earth's atmosphere.
